Types Of Snow Blowers
Single stage blowers
These snow blowers only use an auger to clear the snow and discharge it through the chute.
Two stage blowers
These snow blowers use an impeller to force the collected snow more efficiently through
Three stage blowers
Three stage blowers are equipped with an auger, impeller, and accelerator, enabling them to force the cleared snow from the auger to the impeller.
They are the quickest and can toss snow the farthest.
Other Things To Consider
Electric vs gas blowers
Electric snow blowers are lighter, quieter, and don’t need gas or oil to operate. However, they do have some drawbacks.
They are restricted by the cord length, they tend to overheat, and they are less powerful than their gas counterparts.
Gas snow blowers on the other hand are robust, come in various sizes, and don’t have restricting electrical cords.
Still, they need frequent maintenance, are noisier, and have an ongoing expense of oil and gas.
An electric push button start functionality is beneficial for getting started faster without the hassle of a pull cord start, especially in cold weather.
The clearing width refers to the clearing path of the blower within a single pass. It usually ranges between 20” and 25”, but high end models could clear as much as 30” within a pass.
The wider the clearing path, the fewer passes will be required to get the job done.
Wheels vs tracks
Tracked snow blowers are ideal for steep surfaces where their wheeled counterparts can slip or turn unexpectedly.
A tracked snow blower moves a lot steadier, and some don’t allow turning without a handle mounted trigger. They are pricier than wheeled snow blowers, plus they’re harder to steer.
Wheeled snow blowers are more effective on gradual inclines or flat surfaces that do not need superior traction.
However, some tracked options come with turn-sensing steering and multiple speed options, making them a great choice for most surfaces.
A lot of snow blowers operate at one pace, but, if you need one that gives you more options, look for something that has a variable speed regulation, typically a two stage or three stage model.
You’ll be able to move quickly with the speed control as well as easy speed adjustments via a lever close to the hand grips.
Some suppliers offer product warranties, which are a definite benefit since you know you’ll be covered if the unit malfunctions or breaks within the warranty period.
