Types Of Solar Generators

Backup solar power stations

Solar backup generators are engineered to start up as soon as the electrical grid goes down for some reason. They are a viable substitute to avoid having to install an entire system.

These types of generators use several batteries and store enough energy to sufficiently power televisions, PCs, lights, and small appliances.

These types of generators can be kept outside or inside, but they are not easy to move due to their weight. Backup solar generators that power entire residences are also very pricey.

Portable solar generators

Portable solar generators are compact and lightweight, making them perfect for cabins, RVs, boats, homes, and cars. Some also feature a carry handle or pull handle for easy transportation.

The battery used in portable solar generators can be recharged with solar panels.

The downside of using these units is that they do not have sufficient wattage to power large appliances like fridges, and they generally cannot power multiple devices simultaneously.

Also, recharging the battery might take quite some time, especially if you’re using low-wattage solar panels.

These units, however, don’t have carbon dioxide or noise emissions, require minimal maintenance, and have no moving parts or use fuel to operate, which definitely makes up for its downsides.

Things To Consider

How you intend to use it

It is essential to know the purpose of buying a solar powered generator and what you are hoping to accomplish with it.

These units are typically used by people that travel often or live in remote off-grid areas.

Size & solar input

When selecting the generator size, consider your power requirements, and the battery capacity you need to ensure you do not overload it.

In most cases, solar generators can power smartphones, small appliances, cordless tools, and portable electronics for a few hours.

Power needs

The power output of a solar generator must be in line with your electrical requirements.

Watts (W) Is the measurement of the maximum power you can draw from the generator while its running and battery capacity is called watt-hours (Wh) which refers to the stored energy amount.

Battery storage capacity

Energy that is captured via solar panels is stored in the battery for use at a later stage. Solar generators typically have lead-acid or lithium-ion batteries.

The battery storage allows you to use the generator when there is little sunlight, or at night.

The battery capacity, on the other hand, controls the duration of time the unit can run. When electrical devices use more power, the battery charge depletes quicker.

Inverter rating

There are two types of power – AC (alternating current) and DC (direct current). DC is a power that flows forward, while AC can go backward and forward.

The energy that is harnessed via the solar panels is DC. The solar generator transforms DC electricity from the batteries into AC electricity for usage.

The inverter rating depicts the maximum amount of watts the solar generator can elicit at any time.

Increasing power

You might want to increase the capacity of your solar generator at some point, especially if you require more electricity. Unfortunately, upgrading isn’t always a viable option.

The charge controller is only able to use the maximum amount of voltage and watts that it is designed to manage, meaning you may not be unable to upgrade beyond its charging ability.

You cannot expand if your battery capacity does not allow extra solar panels.
